On July 15, 2025, the European Union adopted new, simplified rules for issuing Schengen visas to Turkish citizens — a decision that creates real opportunities for strengthening tourism exchange between Bulgaria and our southern neighbor. The new so-called “cascade” system allows for the gradual issuance of multiple-entry visas with extended validity for Turkish nationals who have already demonstrated a history of regular and lawful travel.
According to Dr. Ivelin Kichukov, Chairman of the Bulgarian Tourism Association, this measure is a significant and long-awaited incentive to boost the bilateral tourist flow. “The EU’s decision has direct implications for Bulgaria. It not only eases the administrative procedures for thousands of potential tourists from Turkey but also gives us a real opportunity to establish ourselves as a leading destination for cultural, seaside, and weekend tourism for citizens of the Republic of Turkey,” Dr. Kichukov stated.
Under the new regime, Turkish citizens applying for short-term Schengen visas will initially receive a visa valid for the duration of their planned trip, followed by six-month, one-year, three-year, and five-year multiple-entry visas — provided that the visas are regularly used and the rules are followed. This significantly reduces the administrative burden and improves access to European destinations, including Bulgaria.
