Bulgaria Prepares for Euro Adoption in 2026
“Our goal is clear – to ensure the smoothest possible transition to the euro on January 1, 2026,” said Deputy Finance Minister Metodi Metodiev during a discussion on “The Euro, Environment, and Sustainable Tourism.”
Merchants are already required to display prices in both leva and euros until August 8, 2026. By early October 2025, all public administration systems must be ready to operate with the euro. As of July 31, 233 out of 265 municipalities have updated documents for euro use, and 246 have adapted communication systems, with full readiness expected in October.
Banks, retailers, and post offices will start receiving euros on November 1, and euro coins will be sold at the fixed exchange rate from December 1. On January 1, 2026, the euro becomes Bulgaria’s official currency, with automatic, fee-free conversion of leva accounts. The government will launch an information campaign, touring all 28 regional cities and over 160 smaller towns to counter disinformation about euro adoption.
