The airports in Burgas and Varna have accumulated over €110 million in investments to date. This year alone, an additional €12.5 million will be invested in the runway of Burgas Airport, which is currently operating at the edge of its capacity. This was announced by Minister of Transport and Communications Grozdan Karadzhov during an offsite meeting of the Parliamentary Tourism Committee in Sozopol. According to him, this is the last year in which the runway at Burgas Airport can operate safely, which is why it will be closed from November to April for renovation.
“After that, the airport will be able to accommodate all aircraft — from the smallest to the largest. We hope this will bring more tourists — hopefully year-round,” Karadzhov added, emphasizing that unlike Varna Airport, Burgas Airport barely operates during the winter season.
Karadzhov also commented that tourism cannot exist without effective transportation. He added that tourism requires an easy, fast, and well-organized logistics system to transport people to vacation destinations. “At the Ministry, we strive to respond on all related matters,” the minister noted, highlighting the launch of new express trains from Sofia to Varna and Burgas this summer. “They arrive faster than buses — yes, just a few minutes faster, but still faster. So far, we see there is demand for these trains. The next step is to improve the quality of the rolling stock, which is currently below any acceptable standard,” stated Grozdan Karadzhov.
